This position will principally be located at Albany Health Campus (AHC) which includes the Albany Regional Hospital and the Great Southern Mental Health Service (GSMHS), a community based clinic located within AHC. AHC is a teaching hospital that services the southern region of WA. GSMHS also provides a consultation-liaison psychiatry service to the medical/paediatric, surgical, subacute and maternity wards in addition to a collocated palliative care hospice.
The community clinic consists of an adult, recovery focused short term care, child and adolescent, youth and older adult/seniors mental health teams. AHC is a new facility, having opened in 2013, with state of the art IT and Videoconferencing (VC) facilities enabling VC consults to regional/rural areas and towns. The busy Emergency Department is staffed by FACEMs and a Psychiatric Liaison Nurse service for emergency psychiatric presentations between 0800-2200hrs daily. Trainees are expected to join an on duty roster which includes attending the APU on a Saturday to assess new admissions and to be on call from Friday 1700 to Monday 0800 for seclusion and restraint reviews as per protocols for the MHA. The on call/duty burden is 1 in 5 weekends.

The position will principally be located at Broome Health Campus (BHC) which includes the Broome Hospital and the Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service (KMHDS), with community based clinics located across the Kimberley. BHC is a teaching hospital that services the remote Kimberley region of WA. The first year of the training will be spent on our 13 bed Acute Psychiatric Unit (Mabu Liyan), opened in 2012, which services the Kimberley and Pilbara. Stage 2 will entail rotations through our Child and Adolescent service and Consultation-Liaison psychiatry service to the medical, paediatric, surgical, and maternity wards and the Emergency Department. The busy Emergency Department has a Psychiatric Liaison Nurse service for emergency psychiatric presentations 7 days a week. Additional consultation liaison work may happen with community headspace and or Aboriginal Medical service. Stage 3 also includes Adult community service with opportunities to work within primary mental health settings, our Recovery Centre and our community drug and alcohol service. KMHDS prioritises cultural safety and you will be working closely and learning from our large team of Aboriginal Mental Health Workers and Liaison Officers across our community and inpatient settings. BHC has state of the art IT and Videoconferencing facilities enabling VC consults and multidisciplinary team reviews to regional areas and towns. You will be supported by 5 fulltime psychiatrists who all have a strong interest in training excellence. There are no on call requirements and salary is significantly enhanced, as per AMA Country WA award.

Based at the newly established headquarters for Rural Psychiatry Training WA (RANZCP’s first dedicated rural training zone) the position provides a range of training experiences across the South West Region of Western Australia. This is a rare end-to-end rural training opportunity where all terms required to complete a generalist fellowship can be completed within the one region. This includes inpatient terms at Bunbury hospitals Acute Psychiatric Unit consisting of 23 beds in addition to 7 intensive care psychiatric beds. There is also a consultation-liaison psychiatry service to the medical/paediatric, surgical, intensive care unit, subacute and maternity wards. The community clinics across the region are based in Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River and Bridgetown service patients in dedicated CAMHS, Youth, Adult and Older Adult teams. There is also an aboriginal mental health team servicing the region.
SWMHS is a modern facility, with state of the art IT and Videoconferencing facilities enabling VC consults to regional/rural areas and towns. The busy Emergency Department is staffed by FACEMs and a Psychiatric Liaison Nurse service for emergency psychiatric presentations. The trainee will attend and participate in SWMHS psychiatry weekly CME meetings held within the department. The CME provides the trainee the opportunity to undertake presentations, journal critical appraisals and complex case presentations. Furthermore, trainees are encouraged to attend and participate in the delivery of grand rounds, and other teaching activities provided as part of the hospitals status as a teaching hospital.
